This Footpath runs alongside the upper Silverburn from Athol Bridge on
the Foxdale -Castletown road to the hamlet of Grenaby. It has to be one
of the nicest paths on the Island but sadly being so close to the river
it does suffer from flooding and poor drainage in parts. The walk
through a mixture of pleasant woodland and pasture is a pleasure at any
time but more so in spring when the wild flowers are in bloom. The path
does not cling close to the burn the whole distance but undulates up and
round one or two higher spurs of land and this makes for interesting
walking with boardwalks, a bridge and several sets of steps. Due to
several problems the path had deteriorated badly in parts and it was
used by only the most dedicated walker. Others avoided it altogether.
Following an inspection and assessment in January 2009 Manx Footpath
Task Force undertook the task of improving the fabric of the path and
making it more usable by everyone.
Work commenced immediately with the first party fixing non slip netting
to the board walks where a walker had slipped and fallen. This was then
followed up by work repairing and renewing the sets of steps that
climbed and descended through the woods at the eastern end. Where
possible existing steps were made good but new steps were put in place
where needed. As the number of volunteers had increased we were able to
split the parties into small groups along the path and work progressed
quickly. One part would be doing steps whilst another attended to minor
drainage works to clear boggy sections.
As the path finally left the wooded section and crossed open fields it
was very boggy due to several springs running to the river. The
landowner was very cooperative and allowed us to enter his land and make
permanent drains to the river under and across the pathway in several
places. We also placed short lengths of boardwalk over a particularly
bad section. However it became apparent that the drains were doing their
job and the boardwalks were later removed as unnecessary.
Following an inspection in July by Highways Rights of Way Inspector the
work was 'signed off' and handed back to the Department of Transport.
